Headlight restoration that stays clear
not just until next summer

Yellow, foggy headlights are oxidized polycarbonate, and the haze cuts your night visibility long before it fails an inspection. We sand the oxidized layer off in stages, polish the lens back to clear, and seal it with a UV-resistant coating so it does not turn yellow again in a few months. Mobile, at your home or office.

  • Multi-stage wet sanding, not a one-pad shortcut
  • Polished to optical clarity
  • UV-resistant sealant applied to every lens
  • Surrounding paint masked and protected
  • Both lenses matched for even output
  • Adds on to any package, quoted per pair

Headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a factory UV coating on the outside. Bay Area sun, especially in the inland valleys, breaks that coating down over the years, and once it is gone the plastic underneath oxidizes into the familiar yellow haze. The result is less light on the road at night, a worse look for the whole front of the car, and a common reason a used car gets marked down or flagged at inspection. Wiping the lens with toothpaste or a drugstore kit clears it for a few weeks because it removes the oxidation but leaves the plastic bare. R1 Shine restores the lens properly and then puts a UV barrier back on it, which is the part that makes the fix last.

What this service solves

Problems headlight restoration actually addresses

Built around what daily-driven Bay Area cars actually deal with — not a generic feature list.

Yellow, hazy lenses that dim your low beams

Oxidized polycarbonate scatters light instead of passing it. On a dark stretch of Highway 17, Skyline, or a fog-bound Sunset District street, that scatter is the difference between seeing the edge of the road and guessing at it. Restoring the lens brings the beam pattern back to what the car was designed to throw.

Failed UV coating from years of inland sun

Cars parked outside in San Jose, Livermore, Concord, and Morgan Hill see the most intense UV in the region. Once the factory coating is gone, the yellowing accelerates every summer. Our process removes the failed layer completely rather than polishing over it.

Micro-pitting and coastal haze

Salt air in San Francisco, Pacifica, and the Marin coast leaves a fine, milky film that etches the lens surface over time. Combined with sand and road grit at speed, it produces a pitted texture that wet sanding levels back to smooth.

Cheap kits that look good for a month

Most consumer kits sand and polish but skip a real UV layer, or include a wipe-on product that wears off after a few washes. Without that barrier, the bare plastic re-oxidizes fast, often worse than before. We finish with a proper UV-resistant sealant so the lens keeps its clarity.

Older commuter cars losing value over a cosmetic issue

A well-kept ten-year-old Camry, Civic, or Prius with cloudy headlights reads as neglected. Restoring the lenses is one of the cheapest ways to change how the entire car is judged, whether you are selling privately, trading in, or just tired of how it looks in the driveway.

Inspection and resale flags

Severely hazed lenses can be called out at a pre-purchase inspection or lease return, and dealers price replacement assemblies into the offer. Restoration costs far less than new housings and, on most cars, delivers a comparable result.

Mismatched lenses after a collision repair

One new headlight next to one original after a fender repair is easy to spot. We restore the older lens to match the replacement so the front of the car looks consistent again.

The process

How we actually do the work

No corner-cutting on prep, no shortcuts on the steps that matter for longevity.

  1. 1

    Clean and mask

The lens and surrounding area are washed, then the paint, trim, and bumper around each headlight are taped off so sanding and polishing never touch them.

  2. 2

    Staged wet sanding

We work through progressively finer sanding grits, keeping the lens wet, until the oxidized layer and any pitting are gone and the surface is uniformly matte. Skipping grits leaves scratches that show up later as haze.

  3. 3

    Machine polish

A plastic-safe compound and polishing pad bring the sanded lens back to full clarity. We inspect against a light source to confirm there are no remaining sanding marks before moving on.

  4. 4

    Surface prep

The lens is wiped with a solvent to remove polishing oils so the sealant bonds directly to clean polycarbonate.

  5. 5

    UV-resistant sealant and cure

A UV-blocking sealant is applied to each lens and allowed to cure. This replaces the factory barrier that failed in the first place and is the reason the restoration holds up through the next several summers rather than the next several weeks.

Where headlight restoration matters most in the Bay Area

Different cities, different problems

A daily driver in San Jose deals with different paint enemies than one in San Francisco. We tune the work to where your car actually lives.

San Jose, Milpitas, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Campbell, Los Gatos

Long, hot South Bay summers and a lot of older commuter cars parked in the open. Yellowed lenses on high-mileage daily drivers are the most common headlight job we see, and they respond well to full restoration.

Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, Concord, Walnut Creek

Inland UV exposure is at its highest here and headlights fail fastest. Cars that live outside in the Tri-Valley often need restoration a few years sooner than the same car near the coast.

San Francisco, Alameda, San Rafael, Berkeley, Oakland

Coastal salt haze and street parking. Lenses go milky rather than yellow, and the pitted texture from salt and grit needs sanding rather than just a polish. Night driving in fog makes clear lenses matter more, not less.

Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City

Cars that sit in uncovered office lots eight to ten hours a day take direct overhead sun on the front end. We restore lenses in the lot while you work, since the job does not need a hose or a garage.

Don't see your city? We work across the entire Bay Area.

Headlight Restoration questions

Common questions before booking headlight restoration. Don't see yours? Message us on WhatsApp — answers usually come back within an hour.

How long does headlight restoration last?

With a proper UV-resistant sealant applied after sanding and polishing, restored lenses typically stay clear for a few years, depending on how much sun the car sees and how it is washed. Kits that skip the UV layer often yellow again within months, which is why we never skip it.

Why do my headlights turn yellow in the first place?

Headlights are polycarbonate with a factory UV coating. Sun exposure breaks that coating down, and once it is gone the plastic itself oxidizes and yellows. Cars that park outside in hot inland cities go through this faster than garaged or coastal cars.

Will restoration work on every headlight?

On nearly all oxidized exterior lenses, yes. What it cannot fix is damage on the inside of the housing, such as moisture, internal fogging, or a degraded reflector, and it cannot repair deep cracks. If your lens has one of those issues we will say so up front instead of restoring the outside and leaving the problem in place.

How much does headlight restoration cost?

It is quoted per pair as an add-on to any package, and the base Essential package starts at $140. The exact add-on price depends on how heavily oxidized and pitted the lenses are. Send us a photo and we will confirm before booking.

Is restoring better than replacing the headlights?

For oxidation on the outside of the lens, restoration gets a comparable result for a fraction of the cost of new assemblies, and it keeps the original parts on the car. Replacement makes sense only when the housing is cracked, leaking, or damaged internally.

Can you do it in an office parking lot?

Yes. Headlight restoration does not require running water or a garage, so it is well suited to office lots, apartment garages, and curbside spots. We bring our own water and power.

Will the sanding scratch my paint or bumper?

No. We mask the paint and trim around each headlight before any sanding, and the sealant is applied only to the lens. The tape comes off at the end and the surrounding finish is untouched.
